Simulation techniques of radiation damage in materials

Description
The simulation techniques offer favorable conditions to basic research, as well as, to the technological development of materials due to the fact that they allow for quick structure changes evaluation in enhanced diffusion conditions in nuclear environments. In this paper a review is made emphasising two different, but coherent, approaches to perform the simulation experiments. a. Irradiations in the research reactor IEA-R1, at IPEN-CNEN/SP, to study critical transformations such as: order-disorder transition temperature in binary alloys, resistivity and magnetic property changes, etc.., having basic research characteristics. b. High dose simulation irradiations in cyclotron (CV-28 from TCC), corresponding to several years in a reactor irradiation, performed in several hours with alpha particle implantation [to simulate (nα) reaction] and/or proton irradiation (to simulate atom displacements), having direct application in nuclear technology. Results, of electrical resistivity, magnetic after effect, hysteresis and mechanical properties (dynamic elasticity coefficient and creep) in binary alloys, cement paste and stainless steels, are discussed.
