Description

A line list of over 20,000 249Cf transitions in the 240 to 2400 nm region has been analyzed to yield 230 odd and 124 even energy levels of Cf I (neutral Cf) and 158 odd and 36 even levels of Cf II (singly ionized Cf). The authors have identified 11 electronic configurations of Cf I and 4 configurations of Cf II based on level characteristics, Zeeman effect data, theory and known and predicted positions of configurations in actinides. Spectra from sources containing 250Cf, 251Cf and 252Cf have also been observed. The nuclear spins of 249Cf and 251Cf derived from nuclear decay systematics as 9/2 and 1/2, respectively, have been confirmed by the observation of transitions in 249Cf with ten resolved diagonal components and of numerous transitions in 251Cf with two diagonal components
