Magnetic susceptibility of diluted iron-dysprosium alloys

  • 1. AN SSSR, Novosibirsk. Inst. Neorganicheskoj Khimii

Description

Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility of polycrystalline samples of iron-dysprosium alloys containing 0.3 and 3 at.% iron were carried out in the 150-3000K temperature range. It was shown that near the Neel point iron does not exert a specific effect on the behaviour of dysprosium. The observed rise in the critical index of susceptibility is due primarily to impurities in the sample. The paramagnetic susceptibility of dysprosium on the other hand is largely a function of the iron concentration; the sample containing 3 at.% iron, in particular, exhibited a slight ferromagnetic moment, equal to 0.4μsub(B)/atoms of Fe. A comparison is made between the electrical and magnetic characteristics of alloys in the critical region, as measured in identical samples. (author)
