Radioactive discharges and environmental monitoring. Annual report for 1995

Description

The Harwell Science and Engineering Centre (''Harwell'') is owned and managed by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). In recent years, nuclear work has declined and much of the current work is associated with the decommissioning of nuclear plant. A wide range of both nuclear and non-nuclear consultancy and service work is carried out on the site. This annual report is published by the Safety Directorate of UKAEA and provides information on disposal of radioactive waste from Harwell and on associated environmental monitoring for the calendar year 1995. In most instances information has also been provided on measurements made in previous years to show the 1995 results in their historical perspective. The Nation Radiological Protection Board, (NRPB) currently recommends a primary dose limit for individual members of the public of 1 mSv per year from sources other than natural background radiation. Operations of a single site such as Harwell should give rise to a dose of no more than 0.5 mSv per year. No member of the public is judged to have exceeded this dose as a consequence of discharges made in 1995 and the critical group dose has been independently estimated as 0.040 mSv/year, mainly as a result of direct irradiation from sources on the Harwell site and not as a result of radioactive discharges.
