Scavenging of hydrated electrons in anionic micellar solutions of sodium and lithium dodecylsulfates. Pulse radiolytic investigation

Description

Scavenging of hydrated electron (eaq-) by benzyl chloride and carbon tetrachloride has been studies by pulse radiolysis in anionic micellar solutions of sodium and lithium dodecylsulfates. Pseudo-first order rate constant of eaq- decay has been determined vs surfactant concentration and the results have been found to depend on the storage time of the solution. The data are interpreted in terms of distribution of the scavenger between micelles and bulk water, assuming that eaq- scavenging occurs in both pseudo-phases. The yield and decay of benzyl radicals have also been studied and the results seem to be consistent with this assumption. (author)
