Recovery study of the material not reacted in the flame reactor (UF6 ashes) for nuclear fuel cycle reuse

  • 1. Instituto de Pesquisas Energeticas e Nucleares (IPEN), Sao Paulo, SP (Brazil)

Description

From 1983 to 1995 the Projeto Conversao (PROCON) at IPEN/CNEN-SP obtained, as byproduct, 14.000 kg of 'UF6 ashes' from UF6 production unit. These ashes are UF4 that did not react in a flame reactor. During the storage of these ashes, HF gas was formed by reaction of F2 and humidity. This gas is very aggressive and it can be dangerous for the operators and it turns the packages fragile. The present work shows a thermal process to recover this material to obtain a safety product to be handled and stored without any risks for the operators and damages to packages and to contribute for the conservation of natural resources and reduction of environmental impact.
