Description

The Rocketdyne Division of Rockwell International, with support from Combustion Engineering and Bechtel, is developing the sodium advanced fast reactor (SAFR) as an element in the United States Department of Energy's Advanced Liquid-Metal Reactor (LMR) program. The SAFR power plant concept employs an advanced, 450-MWe, pool- type, sodium-cooled reactor with inherent safety characteristics as the basic nuclear steam supply system (NSSS) module. Favorable physical properties of sodium coolant and metal fuel are utilized to provide inherent reactor shutdown and adequate core cooling under all accident conditions. This is achieved with no operator action and no external support systems. This paper discusses how the simplicity of the SAFR design ensures plant safety and yields low cost, highly reliable power
