New scheme for the design and operation of proton-proton storage accelerators

  • 1. Brookhaven National Lab., Upton, NY (USA)

Description

A new scheme for the design of the 1200 GeV super ISABELLE proton-proton storage accelerator is proposed. The facility of the super ISABELLE consists of one (ultimately two) high-energy storage accelerators, supplied with high-current pulses by a small, low-energy accumulator ring. It is proposed that, while the storage accelerators are being filled with bunches from the accumulator, the bunches in the two rings be kept out-of-phase at the collision points. Therefore no collisions occur during filling and acceleration. At the desired energy, the bunches can be slowly brought into collisions by phasing of the rf voltage. The example is considered where the 200 GeV ISABELLE becomes an injector into a pair of storage accelerators with a top energy of 1200 GeV. With 60 kG ISABELLE -like magnets, the circumference of this machine is three times that of ISABELLE and can be easily placed on the Brookhaven site. The designed luminosity of the super ISABELLE is 1x1033 cm-2s-1 with a peak current of 45 A
