Description

Glassy transition-metal oxides and chalcogenides have been investigated as cathode candidates in rechargeable lithium cells, since these glassy materials have certain advantages compared to crystalline ones. It has recently been reported that glassy V2O5 showed larger chemical diffusion coefficients than the polycrystalline one, and that the rate of lithium insertion into the glassy V2O5 was accordingly larger than that into the polycrystalline one. The glass V2O5 thus indicated superior kinetic properties as a cathode in lithium cells. The authors have investigated the influence of addition of transition-metal oxides to V2O5 glasses on its electrochemical properties as a cathode in lithium cells, and reported that the chemical diffusion coefficients of the Fe2O3 containing V2O5 glasses were higher by 1--2 orders of magnitude than those of pure V2O5 glass. This paper reports the electrochemical properties of Fe2O3-V2O5 glasses as cathode in lithium cells
