The gas molecules Sc2Cl6 and Sc3Cl9 and their stability
Description
Solid ScCl3 was evaporated in a mass spectrometer by means of a Knudsen cell. Besides ScCl3 and Sc2Cl6 small concentrations of Sc3Cl9 were found to be present in the vapour. Appearance potentials of the fragments and fragmentation patterns were investigated. The ions ScCl3+, Sc2Cl5+ and Sc3Cl8+ originate essentially from the corresponding parent molecules and may be used as a relative reference for the concentration of the latter. Reaction enthalpies of -47.6 kcal and -53.3 kcal (at 298 K) were observed for the equilibria 2ScCl3 = Sc2Cl6 and ScCl3 + Sc2Cl6 = Sc3Cl9. The correlation between the heats of dissociation of the dimer resp. trimer molecules is discussed with respect to the heat of vaporization of the monomer chloride. (author)
Abstract (German)
Additional details
