Knockout of fast deuterons and tritons from nuclei by pions with momentum 0.74 GeV/c

  • 1. Erevan Physics Institute

Description

Inclusive spectra have been measured for deuterons and tritons knocked out of the nuclei 6Li, 7Li, 12C, 32S, 63Cu, 115In, and 209Bi at angles 00 by negative pions with momentum 740 MeV/c. Two important differences are indicated between (π,d) and (p,d) reactions. First, in all nuclei there is no quasielastic π backscattering peak in the measured momentum spectra of deuterons. Second, the A-dependence obtained for the (π,d) cross section is poorly described by a power function and can be only roughly approximated by a dependence sigmaapprox.A2/sup //3, whereas for the (p,d) reaction sigmaapprox.A1/sup //3 satisfactorily describes the experimental data. The two facts indicate a difference in the mechanisms of deuteron knockout from nuclei by pions and by protons. An attempt is made to explain the experimental results by taking into account two-fold interactions in the nucleus
