Trends in waste arising from nuclear power plants

In the context of policies aiming at sustainable development, minimising the quantity of waste generated is a key goal for any industry. The nuclear energy sector is not unique in generating unwanted material from which society must be protected. Toxic wastes arising from many industries and economic activities represent much larger volumes than radioactive waste from the nuclear energy sector. Indeed, the nuclear industry has been particularly attentive to monitoring, controlling and minimising its waste streams. (author)
