Description

The solar chromosphere owes its name to the brilliant red emission seen from the region just above the limb at times of total solar eclipse. The red emission is due to the overwhelming contribution of the Hα hydrogen line at the wavelength 6563 angstrom. The authors discuss how it is important to understand the physical processes occurring in the solar chromosphere because these processes transmit energy and momentum into the corona. They describe in detail the mean (spatially averaged) spectorscopic characteristics to deduce the mean structure and energy balance of these regions
