Inelastic d+C3H8 interactions at p/sub d/ = 4.6, 8.2, and 10 GeV/c accompanied by emission of a secondary deuteron with momentum above p/sub d//2

Description

The two-meter propane chamber of the High-Energy Laboratory, Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, has been bombarded with deuterons at p/sub d/ = 4.6, 8.2, and 10 GeV/c. Inelastic d+C3H8 interactions with a positive secondary particle in the superstripping momentum region [p/sub +/> or =(p/sub d//2)+Δ] were selected from the resulting photographs; deuterons constitute (100+0/sub -/20)% of these particular positive secondary particles. For the 375 events selected, a peak with an average mass of 2.90 GeV and a width approx. =100 MeV is observed in the effective-mass distribution of dp combinations for all primary deuteron momenta. The cross sections corresponding to this peak are sigma = 2 +- 1, 5 +- 1.5, and 8 +- 1.5 mb for p/sub d/ = 4.6, 8.2, and 10 GeV/c, respectively
