Description
Waste management by reprocessing of spent fuels is currently the main option chosen by the German government. However, research is being carried out on the feasibility of disposing of spent fuel elements directly. The main waste treatment and processing plant (KfK) and pilot reprocessing plant (WAK) provide the operational experience for other reprocessing and waste treatment facilities planned. As a rule, radioactive waste be solidified, packaged in containers and if necessary, enclosed in shieldings. The wastes from the reprocessing at WAK and its treatment is summarized. Waste treatment at KfK includes evaporation of aqueous effluents, spent solvent treatment and cementation of concentrates; these are outlined. Treatment of burnable and other solid wastes is also mentioned. (UK)
