18F-FDG positron emission tomography in orbital lymphoid tumor

18F-2-Fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging was carried out in 5 patients with clinically diagnosed orbital pseudotumor. Histological examination according to the Knowles and Jacobiec's classification revealed in each one case of malignant lymphoma and scar tissue secondary to chronic inflammation respectively, and three cases of reactive lymphoid hyperplasia. In malignant lymphoma highly increasing radioactivity in the affected orbit was encountered. In scar tissue secondary to chronic inflammation low radioactivity with rapid clearance was encountered. In reactive lymphoid hyperplasia the medium radioactivity was encountered. The value of 18F-FDG PET imaging for assessing of classification of orbital lymphoid tumor was suggested. (author)
