To the problem of neutralization of low- and medium-active spent fuel reprocessing wastes

Description

Given is the analysis of technical and economic problems of handling low- and medium-active wastes from spent fuel reprocessing. Two methods are suggested for the solidification of liquid concentrates and used solid sorbents: vacuum carburizing and bituminization. Bituminization seems to look more promising from the economic point of view. Possible ways of solidificated radioactive waste strorage in the surface geological formations are considered such as placing into ordinary trenches or a concrete container followed by placing in a trench. For comparison with the above methods the utilization of a half-sunk closed hall with a light ceiling is considered. It is noted that the reliability and safety of the chosen place for radioactive waste storage should be based on the detailed study of local geological and hydrogeological conditions
