Transcatheter closure of intracristal ventricular septal defect with Chinese made eccentric nitinol occluder

Description

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of transcatheter closure of IVSD with Chinese-made eccentric nitinol occluder. Methods: Transcatheter closure was attempted in 16 patients (10 men and 6 women)with IVSD of age as 18.5 ± 12.6 years(ranged from 4 to 36 years)between 2001 and 2007 in our hospital. IVSDs were confirmed by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE)and ventricular angiography, with diameter 6.5 ± 4.8 mm(ranged 4 to 14 mm), and the distance of VSD to aortic valve 1.4 ± 1.1 mm(range 0 to 2 mm). Patients were followed up of 1 wk, 3 mo and 6 mo after the procedure with assessment of electrocardiogram (ECG)and TTE; and checked up before and after the procedure. Results: The device was implanted successfully in 15 of 16(93.5%)cases. Trivial shunts were found in 2 patients by immediate TTE and left ventriculoangiography but disappeared 1 wk later under TTE including no residual shunt, no regurgitation of aortic and atrioventricular valves. Implantation was quitted in 1 patient with large VSD after an failure attempt with a 14 mm eccentric occluder. No other complications, such as device dislocation, infective endocarditis, conducting system abnormality, residual shunt and aortic valve regurgitation occurred. Conclusions: Transcatheter closure of IVSD with Chinese-made eccentric nitinol occluder is effective and safe but long term follow-up is still needed. (authors)
