Climatic significance of the oxygen isotopic composition of cellulose from tree rings
Description
The 18O/16O composition of cellulose from tree rings was measured. The variation of delta18O (SMOW) with mean annual temperature for five year periods is shown, and a comparison is presented between the climate curve obtained from the meteorological data and that obtained from 18O/16O ratios of cellulose. The results show that the temperature dependence of the oxygen isotopic fractionation occurring during photosynthesis can be measured and that the climate record is retained for up to 90 years.
