Chemical characterization of UO2/Fe and Fe/Cs aerosols generated at high temperature

Description
Aerosols are generated by a laboratory simulator from UO2/α-Fe and Fe/CsOH pellets. They have been analysed by Moessbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. This approach allows the determination of some structural and physico-chemical parameters of iron species which are likely to be formed and liberated by a damaged nuclear reactor. The chemical species emitted by UO2/α-Fe pellets into an argon atmosphere are Fe3O4, α-Fe, FeO, UFeC2, while the main compound of the oven residue is UFeC2. The aerosols released by Fe/CsOH pellets in a CO atmosphere contain γ-Fe, α-Fe, Fe3C, Fe3O4 and CsFeO2. (orig.)
