The ion acoustic decay instability in laser plasmas: Fluid theory and second harmonic emission

Description
Recent experiments on the Ion Acoustic Decay Instability using laser plasmas have gone far beyond the conditions to which prior theory applies. In addition, the problem of diagnosing this instability by measuring second harmonic emission has not been clearly discussed. Recent work in developing the linear theory necessary to analyze such experiments and in clarifying the essentials of second harmonic emission is summarized here. copyright 1994 American Institute of Physics
