Three-dimensional CT for vertebral cortical, trabecular, and integral mineral assessment

Quantitative densitometry was performed on 13 cadaveric vertebral bodies by means of both midaxial and three-dimensional approaches, allowing for separate analysis of the cancellous and cortical bone. Results were compared with in vitro biomechanical testing under axial loading. No statistically significant difference was noted in the two densitometric approaches in correlation to load at failure. A trend toward statistical significance was noted. Three-dimensional densitometric analysis and dual photon absorptiometry were also performed on the proximal femurs of 13 cadaver specimens. The specimens underwent biomechanical testing. Correlation of dual photon absorptiometry, independent analysis of both cortical and cancellous bone, and measurements of vertical load until failure were performed.
