The nuclear power plant has entered a new stage

Description

Preparations for the decommissioning of Unit 1 of Ignalina NPP is presented. In accordance with the National Energy Strategy approved by Parliament on 5 October 2000, unit 1 is to be shut down by the year 2005. Six major directions along which the issues need to be solved were identified. The source of financing the programme of the unit decommissioning needs to be identified. The programme for decommissioning the unit needs to be drawn up. The site for storing spent fuel and radioactive waste needs to be selected. Other energy facilities in Lithuania should be modernised and boiler installation at Ignalina NPP site should be modernised or replaced by a new one so that the plant and the town population do not freeze if the remaining unit is shut down in winter time. The safety case for the one unit operation needs to be drawn up since now some engineering systems are common for both units. The programme of social measures related with the decommissioning of unit 1 for the personnel of the nuclear power plant, population of the Visaginas and may be Ignalina too
