Distribution of natural radionuclides in soil samples at Kalpakkam coastal region

  • 1. Health Physics Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Kalpakkam (India)
  • 2. Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai (India)

Description

Natural radioactivity was measured in soil samples collected around Kalpakkam to study the distribution of radionuclides. The activities were 18 to 160 Bq/kg, 6 to 27 Bq/kg and 76-120 Bq/kg (dry) for 232Th, 238u and 40K, respectively. The data from present study was compared with other studies. It is observed that the average concentration of 238U and 40K in soil are comparable where as 232Th activity in soil is higher. This may be attributed to presence of monazite bearing sands in the soil. (author)
