The use of radionuclides in brain scan

Description
Brain scanning is easy to perform, safe and well tolerated by the patient. It has a high sensitivity, and accuracy (85-90%) in detecting focal lesions with a minimal size of 1.5-2cm, located superior to the brain stem; however, it lacks specificity. It does not compete with other procedures such as CT scan and angiography bit they rather complement one another. The brain scan is useful as a screening exam. (Author)

A cintigrafia cerebral e facil de ser realizada, sem risco, e bem tolerada pelo paciente. Possui uma alta sensibilidade e precisao de 85% a 90% no estudo de lesoes focais com um diametro de pelo menos 1.5 a 2 cm, localizada na regiao encefalica; entretanto, este metodo carece de especificidade. Ele nao representa um metodo competitivo com os demais, tais como a tomografia computorizada e a angiografia, ao contrario eles sao complementares. A cintigrafia cerebral deve ser tida como um metodo de escolha para primeira abordagem na investigacao neurologica. (Autor)Additional details
