A radio-pathological correlation study on pulmonary edemas, shock lungs, inflammatory infiltrations and tumors

145 lungs were fixed with the aid of formalin vapour or liquid nitrogen and cut up in slices. Selection of particularly illustrative cases was done by X-ray. In this work 18 organs exhibiting an unusual liquid accumulation, 27 with inflamed infiltrations or infections and 14 with numerous alterations are studied. In all three investigated groups of diseases the fine-structure pictures lead to a better understanding and more precise interpretation of the X-ray morphological data. Especially the detection of early alterations is made more easy. The investigations reveal how important an optimal technique is in order to detect the frequently minimal alterations. The authors hope that it will be possible to transfer the knowledge obtained from these preparations to living patients and to make use of them for their benefit. (orig./MG)
