The effect of angular momentum and excitation energy on scission point parameters in fission of 239Pusup(*)

  • 1. UKAEA Research Group, Harwell. Atomic Energy Research Establishment

Description

The compound nucleus 239Pu* has been formed by bombardment of 235U and 236U by 4He and 3He projectiles respectively. Bombarding energies were adjusted so that the effects of both excitation and angular momentum of the compound nucleus on scission point parameters could be observed. An unexpectedly strong effect, seemingly too large to be due to angular momentum, is apparently caused by some unidentified difference between reactions in which 3He and 4He are the projectiles. A correlation between mean total kinetic energy of the fission fragments and the fissility parameter and excitation energy of the compound nucleus is given which allows the estimation of (TKE) to +or-2 MeV for any system fissioned by charged particles.
