Reduction of plutonium(VI) by electrochemically generated nitrous acid

  • 1. Khlopin Radium Inst., St. Petersburg (Russian Federation)

Description

A study has been made of Pu(IV) stabilization by electrochemically generated nitrous acid. In 4 M nitric acid solutions containing 5 x 10-2 M Ce and (8.5-9) x 10-2 M Pu, Pu(VI) is reduced fast (for 1.1-1.6 h) and completely (99.6-99.93%) to Pu(IV) at a current density of 1 A dm-2. A probable mechanism of reduction Pu(VI) to Pu(IV) has been proposed
