Description

Camp Dresser and McKee (CDM) studied decontamination procedures for textiles and building elements in a textile warehouse that was a thorium gas mantle factory. The changes produced in total surface alpha activity by the procedures were: Vacuuming (+15%), Packaging material removal (120%), Sequestration (radioactive decay +45%), Soap and water wash, (+1%), High-pressure washing (-13%), Surface removal (-48%), Overall processing (-48%). Removal efficiencies varied with substrate. No combination of procedures reduced activity on all fabric to below 20 dpm/100cm2, our target for a open-quotes cleanclose quotes sample. Results were used to estimate the cost of various remedial procedures
