Fuel element for a fast reactor

Description

The cladding of a fuel element for a fast neutron reactor is helically wrapped with a hollow tubular spacer. A fine wire provided with a small quantity of material identical with that of the fuel composition is inserted into the hollow spacer and is extractable from the upper end thereof by suitable means. During of after fuel element utilization, the fine wire can be extracted and a small length cut off for analysis to determine the degree of fuel burn up to within an accuracy of 2%. In so far as highly radioactive pellets need not be handled, the size and scale of measuring instruments can be reduced. (Owens, K.J.)
