The book describes the prehistory of uranium as a raw material that became strategic for the world in 1938, the political-economic development of the atomic bomb in the USA, the Soviet Union and Germany, the search and exploration for uranium in the Soviet occupation zone of Germany, the GDR and other Soviet-oriented European states from 1945 onwards, as well as the US ALSOS mission in Western Europe and the Western occupation zones, the Staatliche Aktiengesellschaft Wismut (SDAG Wismut) (1954-1991) is described from the point of view of a senior employee who had been influenced by Wismut since his childhood in Ronneburg/Thuringia, in straightforward Wismut-speak. The main focus of the descriptions and also opinions is the Central Geological Plant (ZGB) of SDAG Wismut, which was founded in 1966 to centralise the geological search and exploration for uranium in the entire GDR area and ended in 1990. Documents and photos, a list of scientific works by ZGB employees and a list of employees provide a vivid contemporary-historical background.
