Quality control of radioactive waste forms - investigation of the structure

Description

Computed tomography proved to be an efficient technique for non-destructive testing of radioactive waste forms, as it reliably reveals the quality-specific properties of the structure of the waste forms. The computed tomographs show shrink holes, inclusions, voids and cracks, precipitations and free liquids, concealed screening material, shrinkage, swelling, and untolerable density variations as well as the integrity or corrosive defects of the waste caste itself. The paper explains some examples of waste form examination by means of CT. (orig./HP)

Abstract (German)

Fuer die zerstoerungsfreie Pruefung der Abfallgebinde hat sich die Computertomographie als geeignet erwiesen da mit ihrer Hilfe die qualitaetsbestimmenden Eigenschaften fuer die Grobstruktur der Abfallgebinde bestimmt werden koennen. Hierzu zaehlen Lunker, Einschluesse, Hohlraeume und Risse, Ausscheidungen und freie Fluessigkeiten, verborgene Abschirmungen, Schrumpfung, Blaehung und nicht tolerierbare Dichteschwankungen, Integritaet oder Korrosion des Behaelters selber. Einige Beispiele der Moeglichkeiten der CT in diesem Bereich werden gezeigt. (orig./HP)
