Description

The pros and cons of nuclear power have been debated for decades without a clear-cut final answer. Much of the discussion centers on public opinion, which often is not based on an adequate scientific overview of the issues at hand. With growing energy demands due to ever-expanding population and increasing living standards in many parts of the planet, the world faces the difficult issue of sustainability. The ever-growing energy needs of mankind are best addressed with a balanced energy portfolio. The advantages of nuclear power include cost efficiency, sustainability (source of energy for millennia), minimal effect on climate change (no direct carbon dioxide emissions), and proven reliability and consistency over time. Problematic areas include radioactive waste handling and storage issues, fears of nuclear weapons proliferation, catastrophe, or radioactive release. However, in the same dialogue it is equally important to consider the advantages and drawbacks of coal or other fossil fuels. (author)
