Preoperative CT evaluation and treatment of dorsal fracture-dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint

Sagittal computer tomography, multiplanar reformatting, and complex three-dimensional imaging can be alternative to radiographs to graphically depict the location and size of fracture fragments of dorsal fracture-dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal joint. The current study retrospectively evaluated the results of 13 applications of the CT preoperative evaluation in such cases treated by minimally invasive open reduction and internal fixation. The twelve men and one woman patients (13 patients, 13 fingers) ranged in age from 16-70 years (mean 26.6 years). Results were evaluated according to the Ishida and Ikuta criteria at final follow-up (12-54 months). Nine fingers (69.2%) were graded as excellent, three fingers (23.1%) were graded as good, and one finger was graded as poor. The surgeons found the CT preoperative imaging was detailed enough to allow the minimally invasive open reduction and internal fixation. (author)
