Channeling, radiation and applications

  • 1. Aarhus Univ. (Denmark). Inst. of Physics

Description

A broad introduction to directional effects associated with the penetration of keV-TeV particles through single crystals near major crystallographic axial or planar directions is given. First, the governing of the motion of charged particles by the crystal lattice is discussed. Second, directional effects in bremsstrahlung emission by electrons and positrons are considered. Then the main features of channeling radiation, which in certain circumstances appear as intense X- and γ-ray peaks, and of coherent bremsstrahlung, which results due to coherent scattering outside the channeling region are discussed. Finally, a brief discussion of applications is presented. 70 refs.; 33 figs.; 2 tabs
