Vanadium effect on polymorphic transformation and structure of low-alloy steel under welding and heat treatment

Investigated is the effect of vanadium concentrations from 0.03 to 0.25% on the austenite transformation processes and 1562F type low-alloy steel structure during contineous cooling under welding and heat treatment. It is shown that vanadium is an effective hardener for the alloying of building steels being welded. It has been found that vanadium concentration above 0.03% causes the grain refining in the heat affected zone resulting in the weldability improvement. The lower is the cooling rate and the higher is the vanadium content the stronger is the precipitation hardening caused by vanadium carbides (carbonit-rides) precipitation. Therefore, to obtain a high toughness of weld metal in vanadium steel welding it is recommended to use thermal conditions with increased cooling rate
