Strain tolerant microfilamentary composites of superconducting Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8
Description
This paper reports on an ex-situ method for the fabrication microfilamentary conductor composites that has been developed for the high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8. Filaments of amorphous Bi(2212) are prepared by a gas jet fiberization process, coated with Ag and compacted into a wire. Because the amorphous filaments are about 1 cm long and have a diameter of about 1 micrometer, a relatively low filament to filament cross-over current density is required and the Ag barrier provides for some plastic flow without filament breakage. The composite shows over 1% strain tolerance with less than 10% degradation in critical current density
