The effect of caffeine on radiation-induced division delay

Description
Caffeine (100 μg/ml) was added to monolayer cultures of Chinese hamster ovary cells coincident with 60Co γ-irradiation (75 to 300 rad). The results indicated that caffeine (at concentrations that did not perturb cell-cycle progression as monitored by the mitotic selection technique) exerted a protective effect against radiation-induced division delay. This protection consisted of an increase in the number of cells that were refractory to the radiation insult, as well as a decrease in the average time that non-refractory cells were delayed before they recovered their ability to progress through the cell cycle.
