Description

A report is given on some recent results on nuclear spectroscopy with heavy ions. The heavy ions were used to form a particular compound nucleus which, after evaporation of a few neutrons, de-excites by γ-ray emission through the yrast cascade to the ground state. From the spectroscopy of these γ-rays something is learnt about the lowest-lying high-spin states of the nucleus; their energies, spins, lifetimes, magnetic-dipole moments, electric-quadrupole moments, etc. can be measured. The results can be compared with the predictions of various nuclear models and something learnt about nuclear structure. Even-even nuclei and odd-mass nuclei are dealt with. (Auth.)
