Reprocessing of unexposed TRIGA fuel U Zr Hx or fabrication waste according to the NUKEM process patent no. 30 21 942.2
Creators
Description
With the NUKEM process, the uranium-zirconium waste is put in portions into a pre-heated 10 - 20 % fluorhydric acid. The hydrogen liberated during dissolving has a reducing effect, permitting the precipitation of uranium tetrafluoride. The excessively prevailing zirconium is kept in the dissolved state and after a certain holding time of the suspension at 80-90 deg. C a product is obtained that can be well filtered. After washing several times with water containing fluorhydric acid, a uranium tetrafluoride with approx. 400 ppm Zr is obtained. The filtrate contains less than 20 mg U/l. The advantages and disadvantages of the process are discussed. Since 1974, U Zr Hx waste with various U-235 contents and U to ZrH ratios have been successfully reprocessed according to the NUKEM process
