Response of the ZEUS uranium scintillator calorimeter to pions, protons and electrons for kinetic energies from 02. GeV to 10 GeV and study of the calorimeter uniformity

Description

The response of the ZEUS depleted uranium scintillator calorimeter to electrons, protons and positive and negative pions has been measured in the momentum range from 0.5 GeV/c to 10 GeV/c. The response to electrons is linear within ≅ 1% with a resolution of 18%/√E. For hadrons the response is approximately independent of the particle type for a given kinetic energy. The e/h ratio is equal to the e/mip ratio for kinetic energies below 0.4 GeV increasing to a value of 1±0.02 for energies above 5 GeV. The energy resolution changes from 22%/√E to 35%/√E with increasing energy. The nonuniformity of the calorimeter for 5GeV/c electrons at the boundary between adjacent modules has been studied for different incident angles. Insertion of a Pb foil between modules allows to minimize the nonuniformity. Data for Pb thicknesses of 0-4 mm are predicted. (orig.)
