Calculation of small angle multiple scattering and the application in proton beam tomography

Description

This paper discuss an expression for the determination of the multiple scattering angle when the energy loss is not considered, from the small angle multiple scattering. Also, it is discussed a correction for the standard formula of the multiple scattering angle presented by Rossi. The values of these correction factor were obtained for protons and alpha particles and heavy ions. These results show that the correction factor is important for protons and alpha particles, but irrelevant for heavy ions with mass number at the interval of 12 to 40 a mu. The angles of scattering angle and lateral displacement were calculated for a proton beam resting on on targets with homogeneous material such as water, which has great applicability for comparison with biological systems, wi the energy interval ranging from 180 to 250 MeV, which is the interest region for tomography with proton beams (pCT). From the results it became evident that for protons, the correction of energy in each space for gross targets must be considered. This work is part of a study which try perform a formalism for reconstruction of images obtained through a prototype of proton beam tomography
