Recent Results on the Fixation of Atmospheric Nitrogen by Reactor Radiation

Description

An attempt has been made to determine the conditions under which the maximum yield of acidic oxides of nitrogen is obtained in the radiolysis of dry air. When samples of air contained in silica ampoules at pressures between 6 and 75 atm at 227oC were given radiation doses in the range 2 to 100 Mrad a marked dependence of the yield on dose was observed. Thus, at 30 atm (227oC) the yield per 100 eV decreased from 3.0 at 2 X 106 rad to 0.8 at 1 X 108 rad under gamma and pile (n + γ) irradiation. The production of acidic oxides was also found to vary with pressure, exhibiting a maximum between 30 and 40 atm. At a dose of 1 X 108 rad the yield of the desired products was independent of temperature over the range 150-500oC. No significant variation in G (acidic oxides) with radiation intensity was detected when samples of air at 26 atm (200oC) were given fission-fragment doses of 6 X 108 rad at rates varying from 176 to 942 Mrad/hr. Abstract (French)

Les auteurs se sont efforces de determiner les conditions dans lesquelles on obtient le rendement maximum d'oxydes acides d'azote par radiolyse de l'air sec. En exposant des ampoules de silice contenant des echantillons d'air; sous des pressions comprises entre 6 et 75 atm et a une temperature de 227oC, a des doses allant de 2 a 100 Mrad, ils ont constate que le rendement est nettement fonction de la dose. Ainsi, a 30 atm (227oC), le rendement par 100 eV est tombe de 3,0 (pour 2-106 rad) a 0,8 (pour 1.108 rad), sous l'effet de l'irradiation gamma et de l'irradiation en pile (n + γ). Les auteurs ont egalement constate que la production d'oxydes acides varie avec la pression et presente un maximum lorsque celle-ci est comprise entre 30 et 40 atm. Pour une dose de 1 x 108 rad, le rendement des produits desires est independant de la temperature si celle - ci est comprise entre 150 et 500oC. Les auteurs n'ont pas decele de variations importantes de G (oxydes acides) en fonction du debit de dose lorsque des echantillons d'air a 26 atm (200oC) ont ete exposes a des doses de fragments de fission de 6 x 108 rad, le debit variant entre 176 et 942 Mrad/h. Los autores procuraron determinar en que condiciones se obtiene un rendimiento maximo de oxidos acidos de nitrogeno por radiolisis del aire seco. Al irradiar con dosis comprendidas entre 2 y 100 Mrad muestras de aire encerradas en ampollas de silice a presiones entre 6 y 75 atm y a una temperatura de 227oC. se observo que el rendimiento depende netamente de la dosis. Asi, por ejemplo, a 30 atm (227oC), el rendimiento por 100 eV disminuyo de 3,0 (a 2 x 106 rad) a 0,8 (a 1 x 108 rad) durante la irradiacion gamma y en reactor (n + γ). Se comprobo que la produccion de oxidos acidos varia tambien con la presion y pasa por un maximo entre 30 y 40 atm. Con una dosis de 1 x 108 rad, el rendimiento de los productos de interes es independiente de la temperatura en el intervalo 150 - 500oC. El valor G(oxidos acidos) no cambio apreciablemente en funcion de la intensidad de la radiacion al someter muestras de aire a 26 atm (200oC) a dosis de fragmentos de fision de 6 x 108 rad, a razon de intensidades comprendidas entre 176 y 942 Mrad/h. Predprinyata popytka ustanovit' usloviya dlya maksimal'nogo vykhoda nemetallicheskikh okislov azota-pri radiolize sukhogo vozdukha. Zametnaya zavisimost' velichiny vykhoda ot dozy nablyudaetsya, kogda v ampuly iz kvartsa pomeshchali vozdukh pod davleniem ot 6 do 75 atm pri temperature 227oC i obluchali dozami ot 2 do 100 megarad. Tak, pri davlenii v 30 atm (227oC) vykhod na 100 ehv snizhalsya s 3,0 (pri doze v 2 megarad) do 0,8 (pri doze v 100 megarad) v usloviyakh gamma- i gamma-nejtronnogo izlucheniya reaktora. Takzhe bylo ustanovleno, chto obrazovanie nemetallicheskikh okislov izmenyaetsya s davleniem, dostigaya maksimuma v intervale ot 30 do 40 atm. Pri doze 100 megarad vykhod produktov ne zavisit ot temperatury v intervale ot 150 do 500oC. Nikakikh skol'koibud' sushchestvennykh izmenenij v vykhode nemetallicheskikh okislov na 100 ehv v zavisimosti ot intensivnosti oblucheniya ne bylo obnaruzheno, kogda obraztsy vozdukha pod davleniem v 26 atm (200oC) obluchalis' dozoj v 600 megarad ot oskolkov deleniya pri moshchnosti dozy ot 176 do 942 megarad/h.
