Evaluation of operating experience with safety values

This report describes statistical investigations of 2076 functional tests carried out on power operated safety valves in conventional power plants in 1972 until 1983 with special regard to Common Mode-Failures. The results clearly show that Common Mode-Failures play an important part of non-availability for the controlled safety valves, especially in the control system. The 'Deutsche Risikostudie' does not consider any Common Mode-Failures of the primary safety valves. However there is no significant increase of the risk resulted by the primary safety valves in the 'Referenzanlage' if the calculated Common Mode-Failures probabilities are considered. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Es wird ueber statistische Untersuchungen von 2076 Funktionspruefungen an gesteuerten Sicherheitsventilen in konventionellen Kraftwerken aus dem Zeitraum 1972-1983 unter besonderer Beruecksichtigung von Common Mode-Ausfaellen berichtet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen deutlich, dass Common Mode-Ausfaelle besonders im Bereich der Steuerung einen erheblichen Beitrag zur Nichtverfuegbarkeit von gesteuerten Sicherventilen liefern. In der Deutschen Risikostudie wurden keine Common Mode-Betrachtungen fuer die Primaer-Sicherheitsventile angestellt. Beruecksichtigt man die ermittelten Common Mode-Ausfallwahrscheinlichkeiten bei den Primaersicherheitsarmaturen in der Referenzanlage, so ergibt sich daraus jedoch keine nennenswerte Erhoehung des Risikobeitrages.
