Sharp lepton pairs: From(Β+ + ATOM), and from heavy ion collisions

Description

Decay β+'s upon neutral Th and U atoms yield excess leptons in a narrow (±1 keV) band near 330 keV. The authors here consider these as decay products of the same composite particle, Qo, whose creation in high-Z heavy ion collisions can yield the sharp lines of the of the GSI open-quotes(e+e-) Puzzleclose quotes. Then Sakai's sharp electrons can arise from the decay of Qo created either by resonant (660<K+<800keV) absorption of β+ upon an electron, or as brehmsstrahlung from the scattering of positrons with energy above the threshhold (1.68 MeV < K+) for creation of Qo into a nearly bound supercomposite state with the atom. Resonance creation requires the e+ particle, whereas brehmsstrahlung Qo can occur also in e- bombardments. The authors use Sakai's data to quantify these two processes (A) to enlighten the choice between e+ and e- beams for the next (sharp-beam-energy) phase of these investigations, and (B) to extract values of certain effective matrix elements of the composite Qo particle in conventional QED, one of which affects the calculated triplet Positronium annihilation rate, currently in disagreement with the experiment
