The development of radiation protection in Austria in the last decade

In Austria ionizing radiations have been used since the end of nineteenth century, but the first legal regulations were codified only in 1971. This paper presents the activity of Austrian authority of radiation protection. Establishments and facilities using ionizing radiation are supervised at least once a year. Thermoluminescent and film dosemeters are used for personnel radiation monitoring. Persons occupationally exposed to by radiation are monitored every year. Costs of medical surveillance are about 8 million Austrian Schillings. Due to the activity of the national authority of radiation protection the damaging effects of ionizing radiations were remarkably decreased in Austria. (D.Gy.)
