Synthesis of polymeric flocculant by radiation copolymerization of dimethyl-diallyl ammonium chloride with acrylamide and acrylic acid

Description

It is known that the polymer of dimethyl-diallyl ammonium chloride (MAAC) and its copolymer with acrylamide (AAm) and acrylic acid (AA) are used as a cationic flocculant for the treatment of waste water containing organic suspensions. The radiation-induced copolymerization of co(MAAC-AAm-AA)(5/4/1) wt in aqueous solution by γ-ray irradiations from Co-60 (37 TBq; dose rate 3.2 kGy/h) has been studied. The amount of the residual monomer was calculated from the double measurement by bromination titration method and potentiometric method for free Cl-. The reduced viscosity, ηsp/ c, of the copolymer at a concentration of 0.5 g/dl was measured in 1N NaNO3 aqueous solution at 30 deg. C using an UBBELHODE viscometer. (authors)
