Parity nonconservation for neutron resonances in 238U

Description

Parity nonconservation (PNC) was studied for 16 p-wave resonances in 238U by measuring the helicity dependence of the total cross section for epithermal neutrons scattered from 238U. A statistical analysis yields a root-mean-square PNC matrix element M=0.56-0.20+0.41 meV, which corresponds to a spreading width of ΓPV=0.9x10-7 eV. Under plausible assumptions this gives a value of 4x10-7 for |αp|, the ratio of strengths of the P-odd and P-even effective nucleon-nucleon interactions
