Redoing Dempsey's work in a modern way

Description

Daniel Dempsey in 1958 published a paper entitled 'Measurement of the capillary curve' (1958 Am. J. Phys. 26 89), in which he demonstrated a method for the determination of the radius of a curvature at the liquid (water) meniscus in contact with a flat solid surface from where the surface tension coefficient could be determined. The same experiment has been performed again but using modern sensors (luxmeter, stepper motor and the COACH 5 interface). It is found that Dempsey's experiment could be used as a laboratory exercise in the frame of courses such as instrumentalization and automation, measurement in physics or project management
