Hydrological exploration and modelling of a potential site for deep geological disposal of radioactive wastes

  • 1. CEA Centre d'Etudes Nucleaires de Fontenay-aux-Roses, 92 (France). Inst. de Protection et de Surete Nucleaire

Description

The French safety authorities examined in 1989 and 1990 the data obtained by ANDRA, the national radioactive waste management agency, and the ongoing survey programme on four zones preselected in France for the choice of a disposal site in a deep geologic formation: granite and shales in crystalline rocks, clay layers and bedded salt in sedimentary basins. This procedure led, notably, to the definition of the type of heterogeneities and discontinuities to be taken into account and characterized in each medium, at different scales, in order to build the conceptual hydrogeologic models necessary for the preliminary safety assessments. 1 fig
